A Canadian Moose Blocked my Wireless

Our Chrome Canadian MooseI swapped around the space on my desk earlier today and tonight Tamara was unable to connect to wireless from her laptop in our bedroom. I tried the normal stuff to get it working, but didn’t have any luck getting it to reconnect.

I thought that maybe our new cordless phone was interfering with the wireless access point since it was now between the wireless access point and Tamara’s computer, but swapping those two around didn’t fix the wireless connection problem.

The next thing I moved was our Chrome Canadian Moose (pictured above). We got the chrome Canadian Moose as a wedding gift and it has lived in all sorts of places around this house and our previous two homes. It must have some very reflective qualities, or just be a solid hunk of metal, because as soon as I moved our chrome Canadian Moose the wireless started to work for my wife.

We both had a good laugh at this one once we figured it out. After all, who knew that a Canadian Moose could block a wireless signal?

Hallway Renovation Framing Complete

Hall FramingThe framing on the hallway is now complete.

The hallway will be 96cm wide. It’s a compromise between the 90cm that the builder suggested and the 102cm that the architect suggested. There is no actual council regulation for the hallway width, so we went with the compromise of a 96cm wide hallway.

Because it is quite a long hallway we want to make sure that the hallway width didn’t actually feel too narrow. The hall is about 8.5 metres long, so as you can see in the photo is quite a long one and can feel a bit “tunnel like” if the hallway width is too narrow.

We spent a good deal of time tonight trying to work out the lighting for the hallway. I hadn’t actually thought too much about the hallway lighting up till now, so I would be very interested to hear what other peoples thoughts were on what kind of lights to put into a hallway.

Our House Might be 140 Years Old!

The builder who is building the walls under our house reckons that our house could be as old as 140 years, built around the 1870s. I had started to pursue the age of my house a bit more last week while looking around the Townsville City Council Web-Site.

As I stated in the previous article after looking at the City Council site a bit I started to think that maybe our house was a bit older than the original 1930s estimate that a previous builder had estimated. Our current builder based his estimates on the structure of the original joists and floor boards. Considering our luck with the previous builder, I would probably put a lot more weight on this new builders estimate.

This builder also thinks that the house was originally a Minors Cottage from Charters Towers that was moved to Townsville around the turn of the 20th century.

Kids Bedrooms Framed and Hallway Half Framed

Internal Wall Frame to Half of HallwayAgain I came from work today to see some pretty good progress happening on the house.

As you can see on the left the hallway framing is half completed and the kids bedrooms seem to be pretty much done, which you can see below.

Caleb again had fun walking through the frames figuring out which room was his, where the windows will be and where his wardrobe is.

In two of the smaller bedrooms (I have to stop calling them “kids” bedrooms, since we only have two kids and three small bedrooms, people might start getting ideas!) we have built in wardrobes. We had actually planned to have them in all three, but we will be getting a large non-built in robe for Jessica’s room upstairs soon, so we will be moving that one into the third small bedroom eventually.

We have also put a linen closet in the hallway, which I always appreciated having in my parent’s place. Well, more like I appreciate it now, not so much as a teenager.
